Job Description

JOB TITLE: Behavioral Health Clinical Specialist (DOC)

FLSA: Exempt

REPORTS TO: Director of Behavioral Health

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Deliver high fidelity evidence based practices (EBPs) to meet the mental health needs of individuals temporarily housed by the D.C. Department of Corrections (DOC).

  • Train Mental Health team in delivery of selected EBPs.

  • Provide ongoing implementation support.

  • Provide technical assistance through co-leading groups and "live" supervision.

  • Conduct fidelity monitoring to assure interventions are delivered consistently over time and across various clinicians; units at DOC, in a manner that is adheres to all elements deemed essential by the model's developers and validated through peer reviewed research.

  • Complete comprehensive behavioral health intake assessments, sick call, "Unusual Behavior Reports" and suicide risk assessments.

  • Obtains clinical histories.

  • Makes diagnoses and prescribes therapeutic measures to include counseling.

  • Conducts peer review and quality improvement activities on a regular basis.

  • Performs full range of behavioral health services to include: screening and assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients.

  • Assists in the development of comprehensive and therapeutic treatment plans for an assigned caseload and provides direct services based on established treatment.

  • Manages on-site crisis intervention.

KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

Familiar with and able to demonstrate substantial direct care experience in two or more of the following:

  • Trauma Recovery & Empowerment Model (TREM) and its adaption for men (MTREM)

  • TAMAR (Trauma, Addictions, Mental Health & Recovery; NASHMPD, 2019)

  • Illness Management & Recovery (IMR)

  • Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) and Psychiatric Advance Directives

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) especially focusing on social skills training, CBT for psychosis, and criminogenic thinking

  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) with an emphasis on emotional self-regulation, mindfulness, and distress tolerance

  • Expertise in applied behavioral analysis or curriculum driven substance use disorder treatment may be considered as an alternative specialization


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Masters in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology or related degree.

  • DC license (LICSW, LPC, and/or Psychologist) required.

  • Six or more years' experience providing psychotherapy to at risk populations in a community health setting.

  • Previous experience providing clinical supervision and/or training to staff, interns or trainees

  • Minimum two (2) years' experience of clinical teaching

  • Able for weekday and weekend rotation

  • Able to work effectively in team approach

  • Expertise in one or more EBPs, behavioral analysis, or SUD/MAT treatment

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to manage projects and coordinate efforts of others, including outside vendors.

  • Must have the ability to work effectively with varying levels of management.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

This position doesn't have any direct reports.

GUIDELINES

The position abides by all rules and regulations set forth by applicable licensing and regulatory bodies, as well as policies and procedures.

PERSONAL CONTACTS

This position has primary contact with the clients and employees of Unity Health Care and the D.C. Department of Corrections.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The Behavioral Health Clinical Specialist's work involves everyday risk and discomforts, which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meetings, training room, and other UHC Health Care and DOC Sites. The work area is adequately lit, heated, and ventilated.

RISKS

The position involves everyday risk and discomforts, which require normal safety pre-cautions typical of such places as offices, meetings, training rooms, and other UHC health Care and DOC Sites. The work area is adequately lit, heated, and ventilated. The position requires contact with staff at all levels throughout the organization. There are also external organization relationships that may be part of the work of this individual. All medical services shall be provided according to medically accepted community standards of care. The employee shall provide evidence of recent (within the past twelve (12) months) health assessment that includes a MMR, PPD and/or chest x-ray results.
