National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA), the nation's leading national park advocacy organization, seeks an intern to join our Government Affairs Department's Cultural Resources Team for fall/winter 2021. of our National Park System are dedicated to preserving and interpreting "Cultural Resources," is a catchall term meant to encompass stories, historic and pre-historic buildings and structures, landscapes, artifacts and museum collection objects, statues, monuments, markers, cannons, archeological remains and more. This Bay Area-based position supports NPCA Cultural Resource professionals to advance park protection priorities with a focus on a campaign to establish a National Park unit for Harvey Milk in San Francisco, as well as a campaign advocating for further political and financial support of all of our nation's Cultural Resources. The successful candidate is inspired by national parks. They have a passion for cultural, historical, and environmental issues, as well as non-profit advocacy. They want to add value to a high-performing team that advocates for park protection through partnerships and outreach. The ideal candidate has experience in community outreach, and is familiar with the LBGTQ community of the Bay Area. They work well in a fast-paced environment, successfully manage multiple projects before deadlines, are detail-oriented, and have excellent oral and written communication skills. Background: Though many people associate National Parks with environmental wonders such as Yellowstone, Joshua Tree, and Yosemite National Parks, of our National Park system are dedicated to cultural and historic stories. These "Cultural Resources" share narratives about Rosie the Riveter and women on the home front in World War II, about Csar E Chvez and the formation of the country's first permanent agricultural union, about Marsha P. Johnson and one of the nation's most famous LGBTQ Uprisings. The remaining of our "Natural Resource" sites are chock full of cultural and historic resources--meaning that 100% of our National Parks are in the "history business." Parks are places where people can connect with nature, and where they can connect with their heritage. The duality of this experience has been at the heart of National Park Service's mission since its founding in 1916. NPCA's mission is to protect all National Parks and the stories they tell. One story that NPCA is fighting for the National Park System to interpret is the tale of Harvey Milk. Harvey Milk was an activist who became one of the first openly gay public officials after winning a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977. Fueled by a sense of injustice, he ran for public office on what we would now call an "intersectional" platform, using his time to advance gay rights, Black rights, Mexican American rights, Asian American rights and more. Milk's story came to a tragic end less than a year into his term, when he was shot and killed by a former fellow supervisor, Dan White, on November 27, 1978. His work and legacy helped LGBTQ+ people nationwide. Milk's story is one of the best preserved narratives we have of U.S. queer history, and NPCA is advocating for the National Park Service to share his story.
